Simin Behbahāni 

(Persian: ; 20 June 1927 – 19 August 2014)

was a prominent Iranian poet, activist and translator . She was Iran's national poet and an icon of the modern Persian poetry, Iranian intelligentsia and literati who affectionately refer to her as the lioness of Iran. She was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in literature, and has "received many literary accolades around the world. she was hospitalized in Tehran on 6 august 2014 . she remained in a coma from 6 August until her death 19 August 2014.

 

آتش به زندان افتاد
ای داد از آن شب، ای داد!
ابلیس می زد فریاد:
«های ای نرون روحت شاد!»

I do not live in my homeland

I'm not living there anymore. It was impossible for me to pursuit my scientific ambitions in a place where they are proud of arresting their scientists. But with what cost? I had to leave whatever I loved behind, to only achieve the most basic rights of a human being!

As the world celebrates Iranian-American mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and her historic Fields Medal, let's remember her colleagues imprisoned in Iran. Laser physicist Omid Kokabee - who should be pursuing his research at the University of Texas - is currently serving a 10-year sentence for refusing to work on the Iranian nuclear program.
