According to Amnesty International's 2013 report on the death penalty, Iran is only one of four countries -- including Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and North Korea -- that continues to stage public executions. Though there is dubious legal or religious justification for this practice, Iranian officials have disparage critics of public hanging as “Western-educated” and have argued that the practice “increases people’s sense of security.” Recently the people of Shiraz staged a campaign refusing to attend a public execution. In the wake of the January 7 attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran released a video today, featuring nine prominent Iranian cartoonists, satirists and comedians expressing their solidarity with the victims of the attack and the defense of free speech.

Mr. Charbonnier said, "We can't live in country without freedom of speech. I prefer to die than to live like a rat.

Slideshow: Journalists killed in 2014

In 2014, at least 60 journalists and 11 media workers were killed in relation to their work, according to CPJ research. Local and international journalists died covering conflicts, including in Syria, Iraq, and Ukraine, while many others were murdered reporting on corruption and organized crime in their own countries.
Here, CPJ remembers some of the journalists who gave their lives to bring us this year's headlines.
